Heat Adaptation Protocol (for Hashimoto’s & Graves): How to Stay Energised and Safe in a European Heatwave

Europe is in the middle of a serious heatwave, with temperatures in many places pushing toward (and sometimes past) 40°C — Belgium included. When the weather becomes extreme, your daily habits need to adapt too.

Why heat hits harder with Hashimoto’s or Graves

This matters for everyone, but it can hit even harder if you live with an autoimmune thyroid condition like Hashimoto’s or Graves.

Your thyroid plays a key role in metabolism and temperature regulation, so when it’s already under pressure, heat can feel like “life on hard mode”: faster fatigue, brain fog, higher heart rate, and a body that struggles to cool down.

Below is the Heat Adaptation Protocol I’m using and teaching right now: practical, realistic, and designed to help you get through hot days with more stability and less crash.

1) Power up your biological shield (nutrients)

Heat and sun exposure increase oxidative stress. That means your body uses up protective nutrients faster, and for many people with autoimmune conditions, food alone isn’t always enough.

A strong foundation is still the basics: protein, colourful plants, minerals, and steady meals. And depending on your personal needs, supplementation can be extra helpful.

For Hashimoto’s specifically, ACE Selenium can be particularly supportive on hot, sunny days. It’s a powerful antioxidant and can help support skin recovery after sun exposure.

2) Achieve “super-hydration” (water + electrolytes)

Hydration is the headline topic for a reason, but here’s the part many people miss: more sweating + more drinking = more mineral loss.

Aim for about 1 extra litre of water on top of your normal daily intake, and add electrolytes (especially if you’re sweating a lot).

Electrolytes help your body actually use the water you’re drinking — supporting energy, focus, and muscle function.

3) The two-hour hydration check (consistency beats intensity)

Instead of trying to “catch up” at the end of the day, focus on steady hydration.

  • Every 2 hours, drink at least one full glass of water.

4) Tactical early movement (train smart, not hard)

In high heat, your heart rate climbs faster because your body is working overtime to cool down. That’s why workouts that feel “normal” in spring can suddenly feel brutal.

  • Early morning movement (around sunrise)
  • Evening walk (around sunset)
  • Mindset shift: you’re not chasing your biggest progress right now — you’re maintaining momentum so you don’t slide backwards. In a heatwave, maintenance is progress.

5) Strategic metabolism boosts (micro-movement every 2 hours)

Hot days can create an “energy spiral”: you sit still because you feel tired, then you feel even more tired because you’re sitting still.

Break that loop with tiny movement snacks. Do it every 2 hours. It’s simple, but it keeps metabolism active and helps stabilise energy.

  • A short walk around the house or office
  • A few stretches
  • Arm swings, gentle mobility, a few light jumps (if that feels good)

6) The flash-cool refresh (cool down the smart way)

Cooling yourself regularly can be a game-changer.

  • Splashing cool water on your face
  • A medium cool shower
  • Important note: Avoid very cold, prolonged water exposure and avoid cold water directly on top of the head. That can send a strong “too cold” signal to the brain (hypothalamus). In response, the body may try to preserve heat, which can actually make you feel worse.
  • Cooling the front of the face is often more effective and gentler, because many veins help spread the cooling sensation without triggering that intense brain warning signal.

Final thought

Heatwaves don’t just test your comfort, they test your physiology. If you have Hashimoto’s or Graves, adapting your routine isn’t a weakness, it’s smart self-leadership.
